4+0+3 always equals 7 but not in this way! REALLY special teams make the difference! Biggest upset of the week in MO?

4+0+3= 7 isn't too exciting, or revolutionary,  but how about Ronnie Wingo of SLUH.  Wingo ran for 403 yards as he scored 7 touchdowns in the wild SLUH 63-42 MCC win over the Vianney Golden Griffins. Wingo's 44 points (a 2 pt conversion+ the TD's) broke a record at SLUH set in 1921!  Wingo, listed as one of the top recruits in MO, has yet to commit -- surely this performance will cause some eyebrows to be raised around the collegiate circles.

We always hear about special teams and how important they are to the success of a team. Generally, if a team's special teams performs well, maybe even very well, but doesn't have a turnover or TD to show for it, the performance goes unnoticed. Well... this week in a battle between two unbeaten teams the Chillicothe Hornets knocked off  Maryville Spoofhounds 28-27 when Tommy Hargrave broke threw the line to block the PAT that would have tied the game. The Spoofhounds will tangle with another unbeaten team this weekend, the Savannah Savages, in a Midland Empire Conference game.

Last weekend, the Parkway West Longhorns upended the Eureka Wildcats in a terrific victory. As often happens, this week (the following week) the emotion probably wasn't quite as high, execution quite as crisp, etc. and sure enough the Webster Groves Statesman (3-2)jumped ahead to a 21-0 half time lead. West passed for 300 yards and rallied but were unable to overcome the balanced WG attack-174 pass, 224 rush as the Statesman threw the Suburban South standings into a tizzy with a 33-21 win! This was one of the biggest surprises of the night!

What an offense! Each week the Joplin Eagles (5-1)seem to roll up some incredible numbers. This week was no exception as the Eagles toppled the defending class 5 Champions, the Waynesville

Tigers(4-2)  56-35.

It was a tough night in the Lee Summit School District. Two of their schools lost heart-breaking games.  Lee Summit (2-4) gave Ray-Pec(5-1) all they could handle before falling 28-26.  Blue Springs South was in their 3rd game of the season that was decided by 2 or less points as they beat Lee Summit North 29-27. Both teams have to be encouraged by their sterling performances against high quality teams.

Biggest upset of the Week ?  How about the Class 4 #2 ranked Carthage Tigers falling to the Branson Pirates 29-12. Branson mixed a variety of blitzes and a myriad of secondary coverage and "looks" to stymie Tiger QB Trey Derryberry throughout the night. Derryberry was held to just 42 passing yards in the 2nd half!

Some teams are working very hard to get over the hump but it's rough...real rough sometimes.  The West Plains Zizzers welcomed back star running back, Tommy Myer (after an injury) to take on the red-hot Rolla Bulldogs. Meyer scored 2 TD's and helped bring the Zizzers all even at 21 at least briefly. Rolla then scored 14 points quickly--a short run culminated a long drive, after recovering a fumble on the kickoff, the Bulldogs scored on the 1st play from scrimmage to open a lead that was unreachable for the Zizzers (0-6) as they fell 35-28 to Rolla (5-1).

Cape Central(0-6) jumped ahead 14-0 over the Poplar Bluff Mules in quarter #1. The Mules answered with 21 points of their own in the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter after scoring a TD, Central's successful PAT was wiped out for a penalty and the 2nd PAT attempt went wide. Still...Cape Central battled!

Late in the game after a magnificent drive, the 34 yard Central FG attempt went wide as the Mules (4-2) prevailed 21-20 over the Tigers.

The Boonville Pirates (1-5)were basically even in yardage (262-259) but couldn't hold off the Kirksville Tigers (4-2) as they dropped a 18-15 decision.

We wish those teams better fortunes in the future as they continue to fight when it gets tougher and tougher to do so!

Three Straight Shutouts !  The Maplewood Blue Devils generally have their offense and special return teams talked about as their strengths. Well....wait a minute... the Blue Devils white-washed the Valle Catholic Warriors 39-0 for their 3rd consecutive shutout! Maplewood(6-0) has outscored their opponents 263-29 in 2008.....WOW !

The question has changed...not how many yards will the talented Montee Ball (Timberland) amass this year...rather, it's when will he play a full game? The Timberland Wolves (6-0) romped past the Ft Zumwalt North (3-3) Panthers 62-6 in Gateway Athletic Conference competition.
