Americans absolutely LOVE rooting for the
underdog. Many fans had their wishes granted this weekend as
there was one upset after another in district football
action.
In class 6, the numero uno fell...Blue
Springs South(6-2) hands #1 rated, intra-district
rival-the Blue Springs Wildcats (7-1) their first loss
42-15. The Jaguars QB, Blaine Dalton, held a hot hand and
passed for 273 yards in the surprisingly lopsided margin.
Blue Springs now has a 7-1 Liberty Bluejay team to defeat to
stay alive in the playoffs!
In District 7 of Class 6, Lee
Summit North (3-5) stuns the Joplin Eagles 63-35! The
Broncos racked up all these points without throwing a pass
for the entire game. The Eagles high scoring offense (44ppg
prior to Friday) was a bit off its norm but the Broncos have
positioned themselves beautifully to advance out of
district.
Class 6 District 4 is completely
topsy-turvy. The two 4-4 teams (McCluer North &
Riverview) each won as they beat two teams that are now 6-2
(Hazelwood Central & Hazelwood West). The North Stars kicked
a field goal with 4 seconds left to shock the Haz Central
Hawks 31-30. On the other hand, the RG Rams
whitewashed Haz West 20-0. The Wildcats suffer their 2nd
consecutive loss after opening with 6 straight wins.
Class 6, Dist 2 seemed very
tightly bunched to many observers prior to the Friday
contests. The pundits were right-on! SLUH beats
Ritenour 27-26 in OT as Ritenour opts to go for the 2pointer
to win the game but fails. Mehlville, despite less
than 40 rushing yards, uses a strong defense and
opportunistic offense to sneak past Lindbergh 16-13.
MORE UPSETS in CLASS 5!
In the wildest game of the night,
the Vianney Golden Griffins had the ball last (or so it
seems) as they outlast Chaminade 57-54. That's right
111 points and NO RUNNING CLOCK ! Rob Standard (Cham) was
the 3rd back to cross the 400 yard barrier in the last 3
weeks against Vianney but it wasn't enough. Red-Hot Dalton
Hewitt rang up 461 passing yards for Vianney. The Griffins
are now well placed for post-district action with the win.
In the Other game of that district, the Webster Groves
Statesman romped past Roosevelt 34-6. The Statesman are
"coming on" and could advance several rounds in the post
season.
Parkway North Vikings(6-2) shutout the
Parkway West Longhorns (6-2) 16-0. The Vikings did it the
old-fashioned way-- field position, defense and no
turnovers. Outstanding punting and some stalled drives gave
the Longhorns the ball inside their 24 yard line each of
their first 8 possessions! The other game of this Class 5
district 3 saw the Kirkwood Pioneers spot the Parkway
Central Colts a 14-0 halftime lead. The Pioneers came alive
on a turnover, then turned up the throttle and ran off 32
unanswered points as they won 32-14.
Crystal ball gazing after 1 week of
district...
Most expect DeSmet to emerge as the
champion of District 5. If that proves to be true, the
Spartans will have the tough task of taking on the loser of
the FtZ West-Jeff City game....what a 1st round game.
Does anyone else know that the Normandy
Vikings are 8-0 after whipping Jennings 42-25? The Vikes
have several Saturday games and seem to get lost in the
college-day shuffle.
To no one's surprise, I'm looking at Webb
City from the bottom bracket of Class 4. The top of the
bracket...some of my early favorites (I reserve the right to
change my mind later of course) are Helias, MICDS,
Farmington, and Normandy.
SLUH's Joe Schrick kicked his 9th & 10th
field goals of the year this week in Ritenour win. What a
difference a great kicker makes to a team!
TJ Moe had 424 total yards HIMSELF last
week despite the game-planning of the Hickman Kewpies.
NO...Mr. Whipple
wasn't on duty...they weren't squeezing the Charmin
but the Kelly Hawks used the squeeze play over and over
again. Just glancing at the 7-1 score, many would think it
was AL style of ball. No sir...The Hawks squeezed four
different times and also hit two sacrifice flys on their way
to the win over the Fatima Comets.
The first of 5
games at Ballwin Athletic Association field went extra
innings. In the top of the 8th, Amanda Geile (Parkway South)
cleared all the bases with a Home run to lead the Patriots
to a 8-4 win over Oakville. In the last game, Howell
Central had Christine Ulses blast out a grand slam to open
up a 5-1 lead. The Spartans hung on for a 5-4 win over the
Lafayette Lancers. This blast wasn't entirely new to Ulses--
it was her 2nd grand salami of the year and her 8th home run
blast of 2008.
