A lineman scores winning TD, #1 QB out, 85 point in a game, new coaches , overtime, last second FG, revenge, some rallies and some that fell short, this week had it all !
…how about a center scoring the winning TD ! Harrison Menke (Joplin Ctr) recovered fumble in end zone to push the Joplin Eagles to a thrilling 40-36 win over the Waynesville Tigers. This game saw 4 lead changes in the wildest game of the night!
…losing their #1 QB to injury this week didn’t slow down the Dragons! St Marys used their backup QB Phil Brotherton as they rolled by the Affton Cougars 34-22. SM was rated #1 in small schools last week ! The Cougars were last seen in the Dome in 05.
…3 TD in 3 minutes—85 total points ! Belleville East Lancers scored 3 TD in the last 3:22 as the Lancers stunned the Webster Groves Statesman 43-42 ! WG QB Mike Whittier was 28 of 44 for 386, 4 TD passes but the Lancers (1-1)late rally gave us the wildest game of the night.
…how sweet revenge is ! The visiting Rock Bridge Crusadors(#1 ranked class 6 team) knocked out of the playoffs last year 35-14 in the quarterfinals by DeSmet coasted to a 39-14 victory over the defending class 6 champions as they demonstrated a powerful offensive line, good balance, outstanding QB (Logan Gray) and a stingy defense.
…statistics—who needs em ? The Helias Crusadors, outgained 397-263 statistically, rewarded new Coach Chris Hentges with a 28-25 victory over the Warrensburg Tigers. The Crusadors used turnovers at key times to record their 1st win of the year.
…not just for kicks ! Alex Tejada (Univ of Arkansas signee) booted one though the uprights from 45 yards for the winning points as the Springdale (Ark) bested the Jefferson City Jays 24-21 in a game featuring two very strong programs. Springdale was 14-0 last year while JC played their 1st game under new coach, Ted LePage.
…overtime ! Monnet Cubs beat Carl Junction 20-14 in OT. QB Daniel Holts was responsible for all 3 TD’s as he tossed 3 TD passes for the Cubs!
…more OT ! The Hazelwood Central Hawks(#2 ranked-St Louis) traveled across the river and edged the O’Fallon Panthers 28-21 in two OT ! The Panthers sent the game into OT when they blocked a 25 yd FG attempt with 3 seconds left in regulation. Each team scored in the first OT then Willis Fleming scored the winning TD for the Hawks.
…Streak is Broken ! The Red Devils of Chaffee are sleeping better today as they ended their 34 game losing streak with an impressive 43-14 thumping of Grandview. Congrats!
..some late rallies that fell just short ! Lafayette Lancers outscored Kirkwood 14-0 in 4th quarter but fell to the Pioneers 28-21. Carlyle Indians put up the last 26 points of the game but walked off on the short end 34-33 to the Freeburg Midgets.
…defense !! Zumwalt South Bulldogs and Howell North played a very tough 6-0 game as the Bulldogs finally scored with 5:07 remaining in the game !
…. QB star of the night ! Jonathan Batcheller (Ava Bears) threw for 3 TD’s and scored another as the Ava Bears topped the Republic Tigers 28-21. Batcheller was 16 of 21 for 270 yards in the wide open Bear offense.
…Dawgs barking ! The Aurora Houn Dawgs (ranked 7th pre-season in their conference) came from behind to shock Stafford 22-14 (and the area scribes & coaches) !
