Baseball has always been
about pitching. Throw to good spots, have some movement,
stay ahead in the count. It sounds so simple. Things
haven't really changed. Some excellent pitching performances
this week....
Shae Simmons (Scott City)
hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out 18 in his 7 inning
1-0 win over Sullivan. There are only 21 outs in a 7 inning
gameso Simmons took care of 18 himself! Simmons is headed to
Southeast MO State after this year of pitching for the Rams
(2-2).
After some shaky pitching
performances by his teammates, Ryan Hafner (Lee Summit West)
hurled the Titans to a 5-1 victory over Belton. Retiring 13
of the first 15 batters then picking off a runner during the
first offensive challenge, Hafner helped the Titans raise
their mark to 3-2.
Other
goose-egg games this week:
Sullivan 1 Herculaneum 0
Ft Zumwalt South 2
Helias 1 (Howell Tourney)
Lutheran South 3 J
Burroughs 1
Ritneour 2
Lutheran North 1
Ft Zumwalt West 3
Jefferson City 1
Our
compliments to Tony Perkins (Howell) who has
assembled a terrific early season tournament. Bringing in
many of St. Louis best teams as well as OOT teams. In fact,
Tony brought in Innisdale from Canada this year. Some other
OOT teams this year were Helias, Ray-Pec, Smith-Cotton. The
Howell tournament has 4 pools of play followed by the
Championship brackets. YOU better have some pitching for
this week of baseball!! You can hear the replays of the 3rd
place game (Ft Z South-Helias) and the Championship game (FT
Z West-Howell North) on
www.prepcasts.com.
On the other side of the
coin, people love hitting. Players will gladly take BP all
year long hoping to get that "stroke". How about these
"Run"ning wild games for this week:
St Dominic 14
DuBourg 13-- the Cavaliers score 9 runs in the top of 5th to
take a 13-2 lead! St Dom answered with 8 runs in their 5th,
and 4 more runs in the 6th. I suppose both teams were
exhausted by all the base running and neither team scored in
the 7th!
St. Charles West 11
Ft Zumwalt East 9 (game was tied 6-6 after 3 innings so it
was tight and exciting throughout)
Helias 12 Ray-Pec 11
(Howell Tourney-probably going deep down the pitching chart)
Branson Lady Pirates had a FIRST this week! Branson,
in their first year of girls soccer, won their first Varsity
win over Van Buren Ark 3-1. Congrats on numero uno and
we're sure that there will be many more!!
Shutout season? The St Joseph Angels (4-0-0)and
Nerinx Hall Markers (3-0-0) have yet to surrender a goal
during this season. The Angels have outscored their
opponents 23-0 while the Markers are 12-0 in the scoring
column against their foes. The SJA-N Hall game of Apr 28
will be on
www.prepcasts.com Obviously, it should be a defensive
battle!
It's
always refreshing to see a program "turn-around" its
fortunes. Well that's what is happening at Hickman Girls
Soccer in 2009. After going 2-17-3 last year with unique,
unsettling situation (long time coach Jon Strodtman died
only weeks prior to the season), the Lady Kewpies are 4-1
after knocking off Moberly 4-1 this week. Congrats, and best
wishes on a continued strong 09 season.
It's
not always how many hits/HR you have but when they occur.
The Morris OK (11-2) baseball team belted out 3 Homeruns in
the 9-6 victory over Neosho(1-2). The back-breaker was a 3
run blast in the 5th that broke open a 4-4 tie game. Please
note the difference in games played. Missouri teams do have
an extra challenge when competing against warm weather
teams.
RALLY OF THE WEEK ! The Oakville Tigers
(9-0)were down 6-2 after 3 innings against Ft Zumwalt East.
The Tigers plated one run in the 6th and 4 more in the
thrilling 7th to remain perfect.
HOT TEAMS
TO WATCH !
Of course
Oakville is 9-0 ! Their
upcoming battle with Lafayette this week should be a dandy.
Lutheran South (5-0) is thriving under first year
Coach Steve Pfund. Coach Pfund took the St. Dominic
Crusadors to STATE last year.
Hillsboro (6-1) often gets overlooked since they
compete in the Jefferson County area.
Parkway West (6-1) will rely on the robust offense
most of the year. Ladue (3-0) a
longtime power will have three tough games( MICDS,
Webster Groves and McCluer) against larger schools.
Pacific (3-0) will also have 3
games this week with Sullivan (who has hurled 2 shutouts) as
the premier game.
