Feb 2, 2009                        Check Out previous Blogs

Now that the calendar has turned to February, some things change. Tournaments dwindle, shootouts become more rare, some teams start counting the days of practice remaining, some focus in on their goals. Most teams have as one of their goals - winning the conference. This week we bring you up to speed in the boys conference races.

Jefferson County Conference--

Hillsboro (16-3) and Festus (9-8) are each 4-1 in league play. Right on their heels are DeSoto(14-7), Crystal City (11-5), Herculaneum (12-6) with 3-2 marks in one of the closest races across the STATE.  Hillsboro has lost to DeSoto twice (Borgia the other loss) in a strange twist. Kevin Kramer leads the way with 16 ppg for the Hawks. Festus has the leading scorer in the Conference in 6-3 Jr, Cody Roberts (19ppg) so that are always a threat.

Suburban Six Conference-

Things just got tighter as Wm Chrisman upended the talented Park Hill South Panthers on Friday 60-55. Ivo Baltic, the sensational Panther, was "held" to 25 points when his team fell to the Bears. The Bears went 15 of 18 from the line in the final quarter to ice up the win. Now, Wm Chrisman joins Park HIll, Oak Park and Truman atop the conference race with 4-2 records.

Suburban North Conference--

Hazelwood Central (16-3) is just 2-0 in North competition. Coming off a championship in the Ameritime Tournament, the Hawks have a deep bench, dead-eye shooter- Bryce Foster (shooting 55% from beyond the arc), fleet footed Connell Crossland in the post and Curtis Churchman to guide the offense.  McCluer North (14-3), McCluer (16-4), Hazelwood East (10-6), Riverview (8-9) all are sitting with only one loss in conference tilts. Things will begin to shake out quickly with many conference battles on the horizon. Speaking of balance ? McCluer North is probably the only team in the STATE to have four different players averaging in double figures ! The Comets of McCluer, who have 2 wins over the NorthStars,  are led by the terrific trio of Boga Bros (Lonnie & Shaquille) and Jerrell Partlow-- each is averaging 17 ppg !! your ideas on Sub North? bryan@prepcasts.com

Four Rivers Conference-

Sullivan (14-1), Owensville (9-3) and Pacific (13-5) are a surprising 1-0 in conference action!! Sullivan has won the Potosi and St. James Tournaments with their only loss to Borgia. The threesome of Austin Berti, 6-6 Cody Davis, 6-4 Tyler Garner all average 12 ppg  while Sullivan leads the 4 Rivers in scoring! Games against the Dutchmen and Indians are on the road for the Eagles. Meanwhile, Owensville has both remaining "big" games at home. The Dutchmen are 2nd in scoring in this conference. Pacific has won 5 of their last 7 games and is on a roll. Joe Gildehaus leads most offensive categories for the Indians. Thoughts ?bryan@prepcasts.com

South Central Athletic Association--

The prolific scoring Bernie Mules passed the 100 point plateau (no...they didn't shut out the other team) for the 2nd time this year on way to the 101-83 win over Neelyville. Jake Owens canned 30 points while Quinton Stevens knocked down 6 treys. The Mules are the #3 ranked class 2 team and should prevail in conference play. what do you think ? bryan@prepcasts.com

Archdiocesan Athletic Association (AAA)-

St Marys (7-9) and Cardinal Ritter(12-5) each have only one conference loss but these teams seem to be going in opposite directions. The Dragons have won 4 of their last 6 games. Frosh Jonathan Connelly now leads the Dragons in scoring at 14.7ppg. Meanwhile, the Lions have dropped three straight games. These two teams will tangle twice in upcoming weeks.

Suburban West Conference-

Parkway South(16-5) and Lafayette (11-8) are each unbeaten in conference. The Patriots are 5-0, the Lancers 3-0 in league play. Each team is led by a  dominant player. Ben Hoener already owns the Patriot scoring record and adds to it each game with a 21.1 ppg mark- the highest in the conference.

Scott Pohle and Mike Bertram are the beneficiaries of the Hoener drive and kick-out passes.  Much ballyhooed leader of the Lancers is Tyler Griffey - #2 in conference scoring. Recently, he's really dominated games (e.g. Kirkwood game) with inside and outside offense, rebounding and blocking shots.  Will Kirksey provides an inside presence for Griffey who seems to prefer playing on the perimeter.

Gateway Athletic Conference South- GAC South-

This conference has quietly become one of the leading conferences in the STATE as teams regularly end their season in Columbia from this conference. Troy (15-5) and Ft Zumwalt South (13-5)  are unblemished in league play while Francis Howell (10-7) and Ft Zumwalt West (13-6) have only one mark on their records. Troy is red hot (wins in 11 of last 12 games) and are led by Kyle Peasel 16ppg. This will be a deciding week for Troy as they face South & West this week !! The South Bulldogs are strong again even after Josh McCoy has graduated. Their 10 game win streak (which included St. Dominic Tournament Championship) was snapped his week by McCluer. Outside shooting JIm Thomas leads these Dogs. Howell has the leading scorer in the Conference in Cody Sorenson as well as Cameron Cathcart on the front line. The Vikings need scoring from the back line in these huge conference games to win. The Jaguars of Zum West are led by Brandon Graham (#2 in GAC-S scoring) and Gavin Wiss works on the blocks.
