A pair of pitching
aces dominated again this week.
...Jacob Turner, who some have pointed
towards a first round choice of MLB, went the distance as he
whitewashed DuBourg 5-0. Turner gave up only 2 hits while
striking out 14 Cavaliers. ....Ryan Austin, Hume HS Ace,
hurled a no-no this week. Austin had to go 8 innings with
his no hitter to gain a 2-0 victory as the Hume Hornets
edged the Archie Whirlwinds. Austin has 86 strikeouts in 34
1/3 innings of pitching in 2009 ! Oh by the way, guess who
drove home the game winner in the 8th...Austin !
Other pitching
performances that were winning hands
....Landon Jarrett led the Mansfield
Lions (10-4) past the Ava Bears 2-1. Jarrett rang up 9 K's
and reached base safely three times in the win.
...Alex Piontek led the Borgia Knights
gave up only 4 hits in 6 very strong innings as they upset
Sullivan (10-5) the #1 seed of the upcoming District
Tournament to a 9-1 win. Borgia ( 9-4) seeded 5th in the
District, playing much better in the last 2 weeks,
used the big bat of Phil Landwehr (who went yard) to lead
the way.
...Grant Gordon (Salem) shackled the
potent Rolla Bulldog offense with only 2 hits in a 7-1 win
for the Tigers. Rolla ranked #2 in STATE polls fell to 19-4
for the season. Salem, meanwhile, raises their mark to 16-2
for 2009. This thrilling game was 1-1 going into the 7th
when Salem broke it open with a 6 run burst.
...David Horridge twirled a 3-hitter in
leading Festus past Crystal City 4-0 in Jefferson County
action.
...Lutheran St-Charles (11-13) rode the
arm of Soph Austin Klein to a 3-0 win over Bowling
Green. Klein had 14 strikeouts to his credit in the complete
game win.
SHOCKER OF THE WEEK...
Waynesville Tigers (2-17) sent Kevin
Jones (Soph) out to face the touch Owensville Dutchmen
(16-6). Jones, in his first start of the year, gave up 2
runs in the 1st inning. Settling down, Jones went the entire
distance as the Tigers upset the Dutchmen 5-2 !!
We love these
WALK-OFF stories....
Brett Thomas (Oak Ridge) blasted a 2
run-HR in the bottom of the 9th inning to hand Oak
Ridge a 3-1 win over Delta HS. Thomas, who pitched the final
3 innings to notch the victory, helped the Bluejays raise
their record to 10-6.
Some great games
around the STATE this week....
...trailing 3-1 entering the 7th to the
#3 ranked class 2 team, Clearwater, the Kelly Hawks (9-9)
came alive! Kelly pushed across 2 runs in the 7th and
the game winner in the 8th to hang up the upset.
..if you like hits, Webster
Groves-Mehlville game was for you. 29 hits were smashed
around the field in this 8 inning tilt. WG who scored 2 runs
in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings scored the game winner in
the 8th to win 8-7 over the Panthers. Brett Grempler was 4
of 4 in the losing cause.
...it took 12 innings to decide the
winner in the Republic-Monnet (11-5) game. It
was tied 3-3 after 7 innings. Monnet's 11th inning run in
the top half of the 11th was matched by Republic. After
fighting back to stay alive, Republic scored the winning
unearned run in the 12th to notch the win.
...it was a strange set of numbers in the
Parkway South -Eureka game. Of the 14 half innings in the
game, 10 were zeroes. But the other 4 half innings were
loaded with action. Eureka scored 4 runs in one inning and 2
in the other. However, the Patriots bunched together 5 runs
to grab 8-6 win. Ryan Schildroth had 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI's
in this exciting win.
...Cuba HS erupted for 5 runs in the 8th
inning to knock off St James 7-2. Cuba's bats silent most of
the game woke up in the 8th and finished outhitting the
Tigers 10-3 for the game.
....Priory pounded out 15 hits but it
wasn't enough as the Rebels fell to Clayton 7-6 in first
round District action.
RALLY TIME...
...Neosho (10-9) trailed 9-3 to E.
Newton(4-7) . The Tigers plated 4 runs in 6th and 2 more in
the 7th to send it into extra innings. With the BIG MO
on their side of the field, Neosho scored another in the 8th
to walk off with the victory.
