The fresh start of district competition brought many teams new life as upsets were the rule of the day, take a look at these startling games….
…How about only 1 of the top 6 teams ranked in the top 10 small schools of St Louis WON this weekend ! #2 Althoff didn’t play due to a cancellation (how often does that happen?), #1 MICDS was shocked by Westminster 24-17, #4 St Dominic was pummeled by the Hannibal Pirates 42-7, #3 Mater Dei lost to a (9-0) Newton team 35-23, #6 St Marys was halted in their tracks by the Vashon Wolverines 12-0. Vashon scored on a 60 yd interception and a blocked punt while putting the brakes on the Dragon offense.
…Jefferson City (4-4)trailing 20-7 at half to Zumwalt South Bulldogs rallied to lead 21-20 when South lined up for a 25 yd FG with 3 minutes remaining. Jeremy Hampton blocked the kick, raced 90 yards after picking up the ball and iced the 28-20 Jay victory.
…A new driver behind the wheel of the district drive belongs to Kickapoo Chiefs (2-6) as they knocked off Lebabon Yellowjackets (4-4)when Ryan Moses’ kicked 3 FG (including game winner at 3:09-18 yards). Moses, earlier that day, scored a goal and assist for the Chief soccer team ! Kickapoo now assumes favorite of this district.
…It was a bit early for Halloween however the Blue Springs South(8-0) must have wondered who was wearing those uniforms ? It was supposed to be an easy win over the (1-6) Lee Summit North Broncos. Before the witching hour struck, it was 14-0 Bronchos! Suddenly, the Jaguars read the calendar, and returned to their usual hard hitting and doubled up the Broncos 28-14. It had been a valiant effort by Lee Summit North !
…It was more like a “Hot Potato” game as Wm Chrisman Bears prevailed over N KC 22-19. This game saw 8 turnovers between the two squads!
…Tied 8-8 early in 4th quarter, Howell Central erupted for 28 blitzkrieg points in slightly over 4 minutes as they walked off a 36-8 victor over the defending state champs, DeSmet
….Rockhurst (5-2) made another unbeaten team walk the planks as they overwhelmed the Joplin Eagle (7-1) 37-14 as they capitalized on turnovers early in the game.
….Parkway North (8-0) 35 Webster Groves 34—the most exciting game of the night in the St Louis Area. Trailing 34-21 early in 4th quarter, the Vikings remain unbeaten with 2 TD & PAT’s ! Hear entire replay on www.prepcasts.com
…Rock Bridge Bruins(8-0) barely escaped the furious onslaught of the Liberty Bluejays 24-21. The Bruins offense stagnated when Center, Clay Menchew, was forced to depart due to injury. With the offense sputtering, the Bluejays fought to pull off the upset.
…The Public High League, ignored in recent years in football circles, won some measure of respect on Friday night as Gateway Tech upended the Chaminade Flyers and the Vashon Wolverines shocked the #6 ranked St Marys Dragons 12-0.
