Mother Nature prevailed in the first week after the Football Championships at the Dome.
Some tournaments began, some OT, some 30+ pt games, 101 points in a game, read on…
In girls basketball….
…Mexico Bulldogs beat Bowling Green 54-44 in OT as they outscored the Bobcats 13-3 in the OT session. Mexico will tangle with New Haven in the championship tilt of the Montgomery County Tournament.
..Carthage beat E.Newton for the 2nd time this early season when they scored the last 4 points of the game to win 39-36 in the Carl Junction Tournament.
…St James Tigers raced to a 42-14 halftime lead as they snubbed N.County 77-32 in the Potosi Tourney.
…The Hickman Lady Kewpies (3-1) probably have more games at this early stage than anyone in the STATE ! Many teams have just a game to show for the 1st week of play.
..Some 30 point performances—Kathleen Scheer (New Haven) knocked home 38 points (14 of 15 from the line, 4 threes) to lead the Lady Shamrocks past Fulton 44-40. Westran Hornets behind 37 points from Kayla Rice whipped Cairo 55-47 are one of the first teams to reach the 3-0 mark.
…Aurora Tournament Championship will be Dec 16. The Republic Tigers who jumped on the McDonald County Mustangs 31-17 by half and won 66-41 will face the Bolivar Liberators, who were led by Casey Garrison’s 30 points, won 59-38 over Aurora.
…Lee Summit has served early notice ! The Tigers knocked off two ST Louis powers—Howell Central 45-41 and St Joe’s Academy 50-41—this week. It’s great having these cross state premier teams squaring off against each other ! Nothing is really lost—each team will benefit from the experience.
Boys Basketball…
….did you see the Chaminade-Jennings score ? Chaminade 101 Jennings 79 ! I suppose traditionalists cringe at such scores. It just points out the new style of basketball that has seeped down from the NBA to college and now at the high school level.
…Rock Bridge basketball, anticipating a long run into the playoffs by their great football team, and that features football standouts Logan Gray, Aron White and Mike Petrik scheduled cautiously and are now itching to get their 1st tipoff !
….the Tipton tournament was really topsy-turvy in the 1st round. 7th seed-Lincoln beat the #2 seed (a final four team last year) Tuscombia 49-43 and the #6 team, Pilot Grove whipped the #2 team, Climax Springs 75-65.
…Harrisburg looks strong again as they pounded Fayette 74-43. Josh Proctor led the way with 33 points.
…Affton successfully defended their South Side Classic Championship as they beat Mehlville on Saturday at Hancock. The original host school, Mehlville, was without any electric power so tournament administrators moved the game.
…the Kickapoo Classic suffered from weather challenges. Many fans were anxious to see standouts—Tomas Brock (led Mt Vernon to final 4 last year), Scott Miller (Helias), Chris Stokes (Miller Academy) and Rahmon Fletcher (KC Paseo) light up the court at Springfield in this super tournament. The Liberty Bluejays withdrew from the tournament due to a death of a student of the school.
