That loud
booming sound that you heard coming out of the western
side of the STATE was the Rockhurst Hawklets blasting a
cannon in celebration. The Hawklets avenged an
earlier loss to Blue Springs by pummeling the Wildcats 48-0
in class 6 sectional action ! Nathan Scheelhaase threw four
consecutive passes that produced touchdowns as Rockhurst led
35-0 at half. Does anyone have a cannon as strong as
Rockhurst in 2008 ?
All FIVE 4th
down attempts fail ???
I've never seen
it.....in the MICDS-Normandy, class 4 Regional round game
won by MICDS 21-14, there were five attempts to convert on
4th down by both teams. NONE were successful! In this highly
entertaining game where the offenses ran up & down the field
with strong rushing games, it came down to a special team
play. A high, errant snap in punt formation gave MICDS the
ball 18 yards from the end zone. The Rams punched over the
winning TD on the first play.
How about all
these teams wining their 1st post season game?
Take a look at
this trio of 1st time winners....
Ft Zumwalt West
used the multi-talented arm and legs of TJ Moe to scored two
4th quarter TD's and beat DeSmet 35-21. This was the classic
offense vs defense tussle. The Jaguars averaged 53.3 ppg
coming into the contest while the Spartans surrendered just
over 9 ppg defensively. 4 turnovers (2 very costly-late in
game) was too much for the Spartans to overcome after
battling back from a 14 point deficit (21-7) to tie it at
21.
Moe threw for 207
(3 TD), rushed for 179 (2 TD) in the winning effort.
The Oakville
Tigers were 0-7 entering district. After shocking the
Fox Warriors last week to win district. The Tigers got
revenge by beating their intra-district rival, the Mehlville
Panthers 24-7. Why the turnaround? Oakville faced 4
playoff teams in the first 7 weeks. At some point Coach
Arlee Connor to ride his horse. In this case, the horse was
Jr QB Joe Plassmeyer. Plassmeyer has splattered the
previous passing record (1312 yards) by racking up 2357
yards this year. Plassmeyer has thrown for 1045 in the last
4 games. Also, the Tigers capitalized on 6 Mehlville
turnovers in the rematch.
District 1 of
class 6 was sometimes ridiculed for its strength prior
to district. Well, things aren't always as they
appear.....Oakville won sectional as did the #2 team-the Fox
Warriors. Demonstrating really courage in OT, the Warriors
saw the SLUH Jr. Bills score a TD and kick a PAT. When Levi
Terrell scored for Fox on their first possession, Fox called
time out. EVERYONE KNEW THIS WAS THE GAME. Fox gave it back
to Terrell who powered it over the goal line and powered Fox
past the Jr. Bills 36-35. We'll have a Fox-Oakville rematch
of 2 weeks ago.
Almost 5 miles
in the air!!
In the
southeastern part of the State, in a class 3 school--Ste.
Genevieve a QB has really piled up the yards in a real quiet
way. Kory Faulkner, Ste. Geneveive, Sr.Quarterback has
posted numbers that are really startling. This year,
Faulkner is 279 of 386 passes for 3,488 yards. Throughout
his career at SG, Faulkner has thrown for 7,883 yards
through the air! That's 4.47 miles of yards through the air
with more possible playoff games on the plate!! Oh
yeah...he's thrown for 92 TD passes in his career. Further,
Faulkner has rushed fof 891 yards, 13TD this year alone.
Yes...he is being recruited!!
The Suburban
North is standing tall!
After some
"bashed" the Sub North as slipping some this year. Hazelwood
Central spanks Marquette and McCluer North upends Lafayette
in Class 6 sectional games. Meanwhile in class 5,
McCluer Comets(8-3) ended the high school career of
Timberland's Montee Ball 35-28 in OT. Hazelwood East takes
on Kirkwood on Monday. Who's doing the bashing now ? Your
thoughts on Suburban North bryan@prepcasts.com
Rematch-- good
or bad ?
As mentioned
earlier, Oakville will face Fox in a rematch of an earlier
district game. That scenario will take place 15 times
in the post season across the State. I'm not sure that we do
justice to team that won the first game by having a rematch
two weeks later. This was cited as a weakness when the new
system was introduced this year. Many seem to forget that
District IS the first level of the STATE tournament.

NOT one goal
stand....but THREE !!
Salem(8-3)
pounded the ball early and moved it deep into Fulton
territory on three different occasions in the first half.
Each time the Tigers reached at least the 5 yard line only
to be stopped by the Hornets(9-2) great defense. After
escaping these early attacks, Fulton went on to win their
1st post season victory since 1993 with a 20-7 win. The
Hornets capitalized on Salem fumbles in the 2nd half, as
Salem fumbled 3 of 4 possessions, to set up their game with
Sullivan on Monday.
A new way to
win!
This year we've
all heard all about the soaring offensive numbers across the
state. Not at Sullivan last Wednesday! Sullivan (10-1)
stopped Mexico cold in its tracks as Mexico mustered out
only 22 total yards in dropping a 28-0 decision to the
Eagles. Offense might get the front pages but defense wins
games!
1 win to 8
wins in one year ?
The Westran
Hornets (8-3) were knocked off by Wellington-Napolean(9-2)
55-16 in class 1 play on Wednesday. The Hornets had a
terrific year!! Westran won their first conference title
in 20 years, their first district championship in 8 years,
hadn't won more than two games in the last four years and
saw their 2007 win total of 1 balloon up to 8 wins this year
in 2008 !! more turnaround years ?
