Charms...superstitions...luck...whatever...here are a
couple to make you think about it....
Derrion Thomas, son of former KC Chief
Derrick Thomas, was a standout swimmer last year at Blue
Springs South. This year he moved to the football field.
Using some connections, Derrion was able to secure some
shoulder pads worn by his father. Derrion's absolutely
ferocious pass rush was a major factor in the BSS win over
Rockhurst 14-9. Thomas kept all-state QB Nathan Scheelhaase
on the run all night as the Rockhurst QB went 2 for 11 for
28 yards in this contest.
" I felt
like he was with me the minute that I put them on. I
just felt different going into this game. I can't explain
it, it was just different" said the pumped-up Thomas after
the game. Bad news for the other Missouri HS teams. Thomas
intends to keep wearing the pads for the next 2 weeks!

Coach David Allie had indicated all week
that his Raytown South Cardinals (11-1)had to get the
gorilla off their back and finally beat Ft Osage(9-3)
(who had beaten them 4 straight games). Allie drove home the
point so well that after his Cardinals had whitewashed the
Indians 6-0, he was given a picture of a gorilla as he and
his team enjoyed the minute by "getting rid of that gorilla
off our back". Your feelings about these settings and
situations ?.click here

All year, we write and talk about the
prolific scores being launched onto the scoreboards each
week. It is FUN to watch those games....we like points,
unpredictable plays, long runs, sharp passes, dazzling moves
with the ball, QB who can wing it all around BUT....at this
time of the year, when the cream rises to the top....things
change. NOW it is DEFENSE that we crave for
(even more than that turkey) as we hope to advance.
Maplewood (12-0) has the glitz of Bryant
Allen, who consistently rings up long returns and a bevy of
TD's, and Les Williams, QB, who leads the offense. But it
is the special (I should say "very special") teams as
well as a shut-down defense. Consider this...the Blue Devils
have scored 21 TD's WITHOUT their offensive team on field.
The Defense has 6 shutouts after handling Caruthersville
44-0 while forcing 6 fumbles (all in the first half) in the
STATE quarterfinals.
The Ray-Pec Panthers (11-1) held the Lee
Summit West Titans(9-4) to just 11 offensive yards for
the game as they whipped the Titans for the 2nd time
this year at West 20-14. Panthers MLB, Andrew Wilson leads
the way for this very strong defense. Wilson, by the way,
has a verbal commitment to Mizzou.
Some Missouri
High School post-season titans fell this week as new
teams strong programs pop out into the fresh, clean, crisp
air of semifinal football.
Blair Oaks
(two-time defending champion) lost a heart-breaker 19-18 to
unbeaten Clark County Team. The Falcons graduate 11 seniors,
most of whom played a vital roles in the 06 and 07
championships.
MICDS Rams
(state champion in 9 different years) was knocked off by
another traditional power, the Helias Crusadors 30-14 on
Saturday. Helias, used a 4 man rush, excellent pass coverage
(save 2 long pass completions) to throttle the Rams offense.
Helias will be taking on the up- and-coming,
Gateway Tech team that pummeled the Farmington Knights
53-0 in the semis. thoughts on these teams bryan@prepcasts.com
Class 1
powerhouse, the Valle Catholic Warriors (10-2)were
bounced by the Thayer Bobcats(11-1) 30-0. Valle has been a
frequent visitor over the years into the final four teams of
Class ! other "power" teams who were "shorted out" last week
?

Vince Lombardi
probably smiles down as he watches the unbeaten
Chillicothe Hornets grind out yardage. The Hornets 29-13 win
over PLeasant Hill was typical of their style. Using an
unbalanced, run-oriented offense that generally churns out
300+ yards, the Hornets took the 2nd half KO leading 16-7
and plowed through five 3rd down conversions during their 17
play drive that culminated as Clint Dysart scored on a 6
yard run. The drive chewed up 7:45 seconds ! Ball
control or what ?
How about the
Fox Warriors ? Fox lost the district championship to the
Oakville Tigers on the 10th week. Last Friday was a
different story..Levi Terrell raced around for 400+ yards as
Fox advances to the semis for the first time EVER with 39-27
win over the Tigers. Fox fans, let's hear from ya

Jackson is off
the mat! Learning through the early weeks and dropping
games to the point that they were under .500, the Jackson
Indians were looking down the road. Their FG in the waning
seconds to edge Eureka sends them into the STATE semis! This
win avenged an earlier season loss to the Wildcats. Should
more teams do this?
