Dec 1, 2008                        Check Out previous Blogs

Yes, we were there for 28 hours of football over the 2 day Show-Me Bowl games. It was absolutely GREAT !  Some of our thoughts beyond the stats and final scores...

Class 6  Hazelwood Central 25  Blue Springs South 20

The biggest upset of the 2 day event. When HC was shut down easily on their 1st possession and BSS marched straight down the field in a 10 play drive, many fans looked at their watch and wondered how long this game would take with the running clock. But....as the Hawks began halting the Jaguars offense (with the assistance of penalties), one could see their confidence grow. Late in 1st after a short 27 yd BSS punt, HC took over on the BSS 42, 6 plays later Central crossed the goal line. The Jaguars showed dominance in a 6:06, 15 play TD drive where they played ram-jam for much of the time but capping it off with a TD strike from Blaine Dalton. Central got a 2nd wind when they hit 45 yd TD pass to Kameron Williams at the half time buzzer. It was 14-12 at half but most expected BSS to come out with fire in the belly. The Fumble Bug bit BSS in their first 2 possessions of the 2nd half. Central scored on the first play after the 1st turnover to regain the lead. Penalties and great fast-flowing defenses stopped scoring for the next several possessions. Early in 4th quarter, Dalton hit 3 passes in a drive to regain the lead 20-18 as he showed his poise and throwing prowess. Bouncing right back, Central threw their only downfield pass to a back out of the backfield. Mo Scott was wide open as he caught and raced into the end zone as Central went up 26-20. After an exchange of punts, Coach Richard Nixon of Central decidesat the 1:55 mark of 4th quarter to go for a 4th down conversion on the BSS 40 yard line. It was stuffed! Many blue clad fans thought this was the chance that they had been waiting for during the game. BSS  started a drive and assembled a 9 play drive that finally ended on the HC 27 yard line on an incompletion. The Hawks fans, seemingly in disbelief through most of the game, went wild. One of the Central players in joy, took off his should pads and did 6 or 7 quick hand springs in front of the crowd as they rejoiced. Your thoughts on this great game but it wasn't as dramatic as the class 5 game  bryan@prepcasts.com

Class 5 Hazelwood East 39  Raytown South 34

This was a really entertaining, well played game. It started fast and ended in terrific, story-book like, ending. There were 6 lead changes with 3 of those changes in the last 2:39 of the game! 43 seconds into the game, HE struck on a 43 yard pass to Tarrell Downey (remember that name). By halftime, it was East 27-21. The only score in quarter 3, put the Cardinals on top 28-27. When Eric Brown made connections with Courtney Ward at the 2:39 mark to put East ahead 33-28, many of us still felt that this shooting match wasn't over! QB Dennis Tanner galloped for 50 yards he set up a Cardinal TD at 0:34 seconds. The Scoreboard read 34-33 South.  AFter 3 plays and 2 timeouts, East snapped the ball with a meager 4 seconds left. It was Hail Mary Right (does it ever go left), Brown's high arching throw from behind the 35 yard line (LOS was 29) was hauled down by a leaping Tarrell Downey in the midst of a crowd of players. The scoreboard showed 0:00 and East 39-34 !  This game is one that many will rehash, retell, probably remake for years to come !

There were still other tremendous games..

Class 4    Webb City 41  Helias  34

For two traditional powerful teams, the defenses really struggled to stay up with the offensive machines in front of them. This game saw 4 lead changes and two other times the teams were tied ! It was a real game of momentum. Helias seemed to have the better of the action in quarter 1, the Cardinals clearly took charge in qtr 2. After half, Crusadors marched well but the 4th belonged to the WC offense! Some key plays and moments...Helias scored just prior to half to crawl back into the game and trail 21-14 at half. That seemed to provide them with the big MO(mentum) necessary for the 3rd quarter as Helias was ahead 27-21 after 3 quarters. The Cardinals used TE Austin Lepper for a huge pass play to regain the lead in the final stanza. Helias answered with  quick 6 play TD drive. It was now 34-33, Helias. Following was the best drive of the night...it was vintage Webb City with their veer offense. 12 plays, 73 yards, 4:24 was what it took for WC to go back on top 41-34. Helias drove but their drive stalled at the 30 and WC took home yet another championship trophy.

Class 2   Clark County  10  Maryville  7

Championship games do often put teams in situations that they don't see throughout the entire year. Tied at 7, Clark County had not kicked a field goal during the entire 2008 season. After winning the field position battle late in qtr 3, Clark County marched to the 6 yard line. On a 4th and goal,Kolt Kiger was summoned into the game for what amounted to an extra point attempt.  He split the uprights from the 13 yard line (23 yard FG). It wasn't over the Spoofhouns answered with a 16 play, 68 yard drive. The Indians stopped the 4th down attempt at the 5 yard line then grabbed the championship by marching out the clock during a 10 play drive of their own ! Don't let the final score fool you, there  were 600 yards of total offense as each team went up and down the field repeatedly but just couldn't "finish it off".

Overtime you want (as if these games haven't been close enough), well here you go... Class 1    Orrick 34  Thayer  28

It took two overtimes in a rematch of the 2007 Show-Me Bowl competitors. Both teams loved to crunch out the yardage. Both teams loved to crunch the ball carrier. It was quite an curtain raiser with the the pads popping ou there. In the 2nd OT, Thayer had a pass intercepted as they had the ball first in this particular OT. Orrick covered the 25 yard distance in 7 plays as Joe Kaufman scored his 3rd touchdown for the game winner.

Well...now onto winter sports...what a way to conclude the fall sports season!!
