The 40th annual Pattonville Tournament had the #1-2-3 teams in Lafayette, McCluer and Chaminade as participants. McCluer Comets(3-1) behind Lonnie Boga & Terrell Partlow outquicked the Lafayette Lancers to win the championship title 61-52. The Lancers 1-2 inside punch of Tyler Griffey and Will Kirksey fell  prey to the tenacious,  pressure defense of the Comets. In the preceding game, Chaminade saw  a tournament record 52 points from Bradley Beal including a game tying half court, bank shot to send the game into OT. The Flyers went on to outlast the CBC Cadets 92-85. The Cadets were led by Cory McCarthy's 31 points in the losing cause. These two teams will see each other at least two more  times...wow!

Scott County Central (4-1)is off and running....and we do mean running. Winning the Oran Tourney for the 16th time in a convincing  68-34 win over Advance(2-1). The running Braves saw their average ppg drop to 73 ppg !! This title  win broke a 2 year streak of losing the Championship game at  Oran. Otto Porter, 6-7 sophomore (who appears to be growing daily) led the way for the Braves with 16 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks. Coach Ronnie Cookson pointed out after the game that his prestigious program has never won a state title (which they've done many times) without winning the Oran Tournament!  Now...there isn't any pressure, is there ?  bryan@prepcasts.com

Speaking of Scott County Central.... the girls team was unable to field a team due to a shortage of players. So, the Class 1 District 3 Crown is awarded to Delta (the only other team in the district!) The Bobcats, who really didn't need any help, were the State runner-up last year and opened their season by pounding St. Vincent 57-32. Taylor Smith led the scoring with 20 points and Jodi Menz added 16 for the talented Bobcats.

Hop in our Prepcasts plane...let's  fly around the state and  take a closer look at some  of the tournament champions and stories....

...at Northwest Girls, Kirkwood went  OT to edge Cape Central 55-54. Cape did enjoy having Wendy Zickfield top the 1000 point barrier for her career in this game.

...at Vianney Boys, Hazelwood Central (5-0)won this tournament for the 5th straight year by pulling away from the host school 56-44. A long 18-4 spurt in the final quarter put away the Golden Griffins. Bryce Foster led the way for the Hawks.

...at Aurora Girls, Republic lived up to expectations. The #1 Tigers (3-0)knocked off Mt Vernon  (seeded #6) 51-35. Republic banked this trophy WITHOUT the services of shooting guards Courtney Gardner and Jamie Sifferman who are both out for the season with recently suffered ACL injuries !

...at Strafford Boys, #1 seeded Strafford fought off the upset minded, #6 seeded Pilot Grove Panthers 84-72.The Indians were red-hot from the field (31 of 50--that's 62% folks) including 9 of 12 from  beyond the arc

...at Farmington Girls, Cape ND shot off to a quick start and never looked back as they beat Jackson 57-39. Jane Morrill scored 22 for the winners.

...at Lebanon Boys, Rock Bridge beat Waynesville 78-63 as they won three games in 3 days. The Bruins were led by Ricky Kreklow's 22.

...South Side Classic @ DuBourg Girls, two teams bouncing back from sub .500 seasons last year battled for the crown.  The Mehlville Panthers Chaness Washington and Stephanie Hubert each tallied 21 to lead the Panters past the Lutheran South Lancers 56-50. Kristin Carney dropped in 20 points for the Lancers in the losing cause.

..at Potosi Girls, St James took home the hardware by holding  off Meadow Heights 45-36. The Panthers late rally fell short to the Tigers. Brittany Herode netted 16 for the winners.

...at Glasgow Boys, Harrisburg enjoyed a double-double from Mex Manning (11 boards, 11 pts) as they defeated Glasgow 66-46 to win the championship.

...at Fair Grove Girls, Fair Grove had a different High scorer for each game and coupled that with a relenting defense to wear down the West Plains Zizzers 60-55. In the title tilt, Soph Erin Gavin scored 19 including 5 from beyond the arc.

LOONNNGGGEEESSSTTT game of the week WINNER!!

Perryville  went 4 overtimes to down the Delta Bobcats 61-59 in the Woodland Boys Tournament.

At Kennett, Football Coach Kirk Welch won his first 6 games, dropped his last 4. He submitted his letter of  resignation to the board recently. But... the board didn't accept it!  How's that for a switcharoo ? Probably more  to come later on this story.

It isn't the OK Corral...but there was plenty of shootout noise this week in Columbia, MO where the Norm Stewart Classic was hosted.

...girls action--St Joseph Academy (3-0) spanked the Hickman Kewpies 57-20. Watch out! Why? The Angels are usually very good. Well, two 6-1 Frosh twins (Maddie & Morgan Stock) have arrived to supplement the already powerful Angel basketball machine. After the Kewpies scored the first 4 points, ST Joe went on a game breaking 27-zip run as the Stocks knocked down 12 of those points.

...girls action-- Two of the most powerful programs in Class 5 tangled as the defending state champions, the Rock Bridge Bruins (4-0) upended

the Kickapoo Lady Chiefs 48-42.As often happens, it was one long run that was the deciding factor. No exception here-- the Bruins rolled during the middle of the 3rd quarter as they raced to a 22-10 "run" that put them into the lead permanently. Sr. Katherine Harry, the 6-3 DePaul signee, led the way from the inside for the Bruins with 16 points, 13 rebounds and two block shots. Interestingly enough, these two great teams will go at it again this week at Kickapoo. It should be another terrific game.

..boys action--Moberly Spartan (2-0) held their breath as a 3 point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the backboard by the Kirkwood Pioneers. Moberly held onto the 65-63 win over the Pioneers in a game that a very unusual ending (don't they all?). With a 65-63 lead with only a few seconds left, the Spartans stole the ball. As they advanced it to the front court, inexplicably they shot the ball, missed and Kirkwood rebounded the ball that led to the final 3 point attempt by Kirkwood.  A lesson to be learned -- at some point, players learn that they are playing the clock and not the opponent. Many of the Spartans had a quick flashback of last year when St Charles West beat them at the buzzer with a 3-ball to advance to STATE.

Finally, our congratulations to the newest members of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Some of the class being inducted on February 7 will be Grant Wistrom (Webb City, Nebraska, Ram star) who was a Champion on all levels of his career. Todd Worrell, the star relief hurler for the Cardinals, joins Wistrom in the induction. Worrell's 256 saves is 3rd in Cardinal history and 26th in MLB records. Others to be recognized are Will Shields (KC Chief offensive All-Pro guard of 12 seasons); John Mayberry who starred for the KC Royals from 1972-1977. Some Mizzou football standouts-- Danny LaRose, Bill & Vince Tobin-- from the Dan Devine era will be inducted. Some other inductees are basketball coaches from Missouri- Larry Holley (more than 750 wins at Wm Jewell), Reba Sims (1st woman coach at Southwest MO state in basketball, softball and field hockey), Bob Brown (581-216 record at Parkview). Congrats to them and their families.
